“Days of Trouble”
March 11th, 2008 | by Ed |I’ve come to a new appreciation of Ecclesiastes 12:1 which reads, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come…” With age comes increasing “days of trouble.”
I told my son the other day, “Don’t get old.” (You can tell when you’re getting old, because you start telling others “Don’t get old”). Then I realized that the alternative to getting old is dying young! I’ll take the option of getting old, even wtih its “days of trouble.”
For those who don’t know, I’ve recently experienced some of those “days of trouble.” I got home Saturday from the hospital after having prostate surgery on Thursday. It seems that my prostate was enlarged and was completely constricting the urethra, requiring surgery to resolve the problem.
They technically defined it as “minimally invasive surgery,” but whoever called it that has obviously never had the surgery done on them!
Apparently, there’s commonly a lot of pain following this surgery. They were trying to prepare me for the pain that would radiate from somewhere deep in the core of my being, and ordered several extra bottles of morphine to be safe.
But I’m afraid I disappointed them. I didn’t experience any pain. My nurses kept asking me so often if I needed pain medication, I almost took some so that they would feel better! I’m sure that this was the mercy of God in response to the many prayers on my behalf.
I’m home restless resting. I’m supposed to rest for 2 weeks. So, I won’t be at church again until Good Friday. I’m planning to preach at the Easter service. I look forward to seeing everyone again. The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming! I’m really blessed to be a part of this church.
Thank you for all your cards, e-mails, calls, thoughts and prayers.
