Living in the Overflow of God’s Love
October 3rd, 2008 | by Ed |This Sunday, I begin a new series entitled Living in the Overflow of God’s Love.
In a sense, I’m continuing and expanding upon the series I’ve just completed entitled The Father’s Heart. As I taught that series on the prodigal son, I sensed that God was giving us a fresh revelation of His love–resulting in a deeper appreciation of His love, a greater sense of wonder at His love, and a greater desire to experience His love.
In this series, we’ll be using 1 John 4:7-19 as our primary text. One of the key truths that the apostle John points out in this passage is the you can only love others out of the overflow of God’s love; you can only love others to the degree that you are living in and enjoying God’s love for yourself.
Many Christians hear sermons on the need to love God more, or to love others more. So they try to be more loving. They pray for more love (which God presumably keeps in a bottle somewhere in heaven). Or they try to work it up. And the harder they try to love, the harder it is to love.
This Sunday, my message is entitled The Overflow of Irresistible Love. Find out how you can love God and others out of the overflow of God’s love in your life. This week’s Sermon in a Sentence says it all: Rather than exhorting us to love others with a love we can’t produce, God invites us to live in the overflow of a love we can’t resist.
