Deeply Rooted in God’s Love

This Sunday, I’m continuing my series of messages entitled Living in the Overflow of God’s Love. My text is Ephesians 3:16-17:

“I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources, He will he will give you mighty inner strength through his Spirit. And I pray that Christ will be more and more at home in your hearts as you trust in him.  May your roots go down deep in the soil of God’s marvelous love.”

In this passage, there is a three-fold prayer for believers: (1) That the Spirit would empower us in the inner person; (2) That Christ would dwell in our hearts; and (3) That we would be deeply rooted in God’s love.

It’s really one prayer, expressed by three metaphors, all of which have to do with the inner spiritual dimension: (1) the power of the Spirit in the inner person, (2) the life of the indwelling Christ in our hearts, and (3) roots that tap underground streams of God’s love.

Paul’s prayer is that we would be strengthened in the inner man, the inner, spiritual part of our being. This Sunday, we look at who this “inner man” is, and how to be strengthened and renewed spiritually. The Old Testament helps us by vividly illustrating this wonderful truth of cultivating the inner life.

As the Spirit of God reveals the heart of God, I believe that you’ll be motivated to pursue a deeper and more intimate relationship with God.
