The Footsteps of Faith

The Christian life is a walk of daily dependence upon God; it’s following God in the footsteps of faith. The psalmist says it this way:

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105).

God doesn’t give us a 500-watt halogen searchbeam to illumine the next 100 yards of our journey. He gives us just enough light for the next step  on our journey. When we take the next step in faith and obedience to God, we have light for another step. Our Christian walk consists of taking steps of obedience to God as God reveals them.

Each time we take a step of faith and obedience, the purpose of God for our lives unfolds a little bit more. Obedience is “taking the next step” that God reveals.

This is illustrated in the life of Abraham. The Bible says that we are to ”walk in the footsteps of the faith of our father Abraham” (Romans 4:12). Every time Abraham took a step of obedience, the purpose of God for his life unfolded a little more. Consider God’s promise to give Abraham the land.

  • Genesis 12:1 — “Go forth…to the land that I will show you.”
  • Genesis 12:7 — “To your descendants I will give this land.”
  • Genesis 15:7 — “…give you this land to possess it.”

Like Abraham, as we follow the Lord in faith and obedience, his purposes become clearer and his promises become greater. Let us walk in the footsteps of faith!
